Welcome translanguaging in your classroom!
Teachers must welcome all languages in the classroom so students feel welcome and secure by avoiding phrases such as "English Only" or "You cannot use your language." Those phrases bring negative connotations and discourage students from using their native language to support their learning. Instead, teachers must provide positive feedback, recognizing students' effort while acquiring English. Try using phrases such as the following:
-
Your English is improving!
-
I am impressed that you are using all the resources!
-
Please teach me how to say Hello and Goodbye in your language.
-
That example is good; how can you say it in English?

Simple questions that show interest in students’ first language and reaffirm their effort in the acquisition of English will result in positive acculturation adaptation and mastering a second language.
