Small Groups

One of the benefits of forming groups in the classroom is that students receive help and support from each other. If educators place a student who does not speak English with the rest of the members who only speak English, they are not providing the correct support. The student will not acquire the target language just by being with students who only speak English. Instead, educators should group students who speak the same language in pairs or one group, allowing students to have a sense of belonging as they learn the target language and the curriculum content. If the teacher does not have a pair of students who speak the same language, pairing English learners will also aid students during the acquisition of English.
